Amen, brutha. I go so far as to recommend that people learn an 8-bit assembly.
6502 or 8088 or whatever. Just something so you get some idea of what your
instructions are turning into. As it happens, my experience with 6502 assembly -
learned because I couldn't do what I wanted with AppleSoft BASIC and couldn't
afford a "real" toolchain - got me into the door of the company where my work
has remained interesting and challenging for several years.
