Since the Cocoa File APIs are pathname based, it's a bit problematic even if I agree the 1024 limits is not often going to be reached.

This is a known problem - There is a bug outstanding on this and it's being looked at. It's not clear for NSFileManager exactly what the best option is as far as changing the working directory, etc., but it -is- being looked at.

I just talked to the File Manager guy here about path resolution on their end and they bump into PATH_MAX also.
