I think Robert was talking about the status bar in the Finder
that displays available disk space and the number of items in
view. In Mail the status bar displays number of messages and a
network activity indicator (spinning arrows). It is usually
located in the main window just below the toolbar.
I have asked about this as well. It seems this is a common tool
used in many of Apples applications for displaying some form of
status information, but there doesn't seem to be a public API
for it.

Do you mean NSToolbar? That is the strip of buttons that you
see in Mail and PB, right below the title bar. You can find a
simple example in /Developer/Examples/AppKit/SimpleToolbar.
NSStatusBar is for putting items in the right end of the menu
bar; they are visible no matter what app is active. It's not
really Finder's.

can anybody point me to an example to have a status
bar in one of my OWN windows (ala Mail or Project
Builder)? The cocoa docs on NSStatusBar seem to talk
about only the Finder's status bar on the top of the
screen. Thanx!
