I believe he means Finder's disk space/number of items status bar just below the toolbar. I get confused between them too.. AFAIK that's just a regular view that Finder handles - no API involved.

NSStatusBar is for putting items in the right end of the menu bar; they are visible no matter what app is active. It's not really Finder's.
