Since you asked, I'll give you my view.
If the purveyor of the product doesn't charge for it, then it must be
worthless. And it is therefore dangerous for me to rely on its being
available for any length of time.
If the purveyor charges what seems to be a fair price in terms of cost and
likely usage rates, then it's bound to be around for a long time and I'm
willing to count on it. I will know, of course, that the cheapskates and
freeloaders won't pay for it, but then I wouldn't expect them to pay for my
product, either.
This is the no-free-lunch principle at work. Charging what your product is
worth (whether you're Apple Computer, James DiPalma or Bill Cheeseman) seems
like eminently good business sense to me. But most of the software world (at
least the most vocal part of it) doesn't think like I do, as far as I can
tell.
