Folks, the Paypal talk si really off-topic for cocoa-dev, so please take it
offline.
But before you do, I thought I'd pop in with a few comments, since this
thread has some common issues and some special challenges.
The common issue: I doubt there are many companies where there isn't a "they
suck" web site on the net somewhere. Sites like that are meaningless unless
you have some way to judge what percentage of customers are having problems
with the company. EVERYONE has problems with some organization, and every
company has people who have problems with it. Those problems might not even
be the fault of the company, but the person writing the web site generally
isn't interested in fairness. Take it all with a huge grain of salt, and try
to find out the ENTIRE story, not just what the complainers say. Sometimes
they're right, sometimes they're whiners.
Having said that, about PayPal specifically -- from my experience and from
having done some research of my own, the people having problems with PayPal
ar ea fairly small minority of users. Chances are, you won't have a problem
with them.
However, if you DO have a problem with them, resolution can be a b-st-rd,
and being in the minority won't make you feel better. When PayPal goes bad,
it can go really bad.
As someone said, they're not a bank, but they play one on TV. This (to me,
at least) is a problem. It is also a problem to a number of state
governments. Two or three have banned it from doing business in their states
(either at all, or between two residents of the same state) until they are
granted banking papers. Others are investigating them for the same thing.
Given that (if you go to their web site) they offer cash debit cards and
their own credit card now, it's rather hard to say "they aren't a bank" with
a straight face (IMHO).
And PayPal seems to realize this. They announced a deal this week with Wells
Fargo, and it looks like Wells Fargo will be taking over the operations of
PayPal that ought to be run by a bank. So I think long-term, this is likely
to resolve most of the issues I see with PayPal (and it's long overdue). But
short term, it might increase entropy. We'll have to see.
All that IMHO and FWIW. And now, with your cooperation, I'd like to take
this offline...
