No. It is a ..." a freely redistributable open-source implementation of
the X Window System which runs on UNIX(R) and UNIX-like operating systems
such as Linux, all of the BSD variants, Sun Solaris x86, Mac OS X (via
Darwin), as well as other platforms like OS/2 and Cygwin."
You ought to read through all the information contained at:

The above quote was taken from the "What is XFree86?" section of that page.

is it worth checking out?
ummm.... well if you are running any Linux distribution (for example) you
NEED it, but you needn't know anything about it. Since you are writing to
this list I assume you are referring to XFree86 on a Mac.
If you want to install XFree86 under Mac OS X you can check out the
information on this O'Reilly page:
http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/mac/2001/07/17/xfree86_install.html

Define "goodies". Define "benifit". Running XFree86 on your Mac OS X will
allow you to run some UNIX apps you could not otherwise run (on Aqua). Don't
really know, but I suppose if you wanted to do development for a traditional
*NIX environment you could use XFree86 to run something like Glade (use
Google if you don't know what this is).

it sounds cool
Hmmm... I don't really think of it as being cool. It is just a way to have a
(free - as in speech and beer) GUI system on a computer. There are certainly
headaches associated with running XFree86 and it is nowhere near as elegant
as Aqua.
Frankly, it sounds like you have no clue what XFree86 is. If that is the
case it would probably be better to do some simple searching on google to
find out. This in no way relates to either cocoa or cocoa development so is
really out of place on this list.
