Rename the .hidden file that is in the root of the harddisk.
The file contains all the directories that the Finder won't show.
Then relaunch the Finder and... voila.

It remains a pain to deal with files though, since the Finder does not run
under root.
Even when you 'sudo -s' a terminal session and start textedit from the root
account, e.g. 'open -e /etc/printcap', the process pops up under the user
that sudo-ed instead of under root.

does anyone know how to view hidden directories like usr/bin/,
var/, etc. in the Finder? it's a pain to have to go to Terminal
all the time to work with these directories and their files.

thanks.
