Where to put "Check for Updates" menu item

Is there an official place to put a "Check for Updates" menu item? I can
think of three good places: Just under the Preferences item in the
application menu; In the Help menu; In a button in the application About
box. I'm leaning toward the Application menu since it is kind of an
application function, but the Help menu is often lonely, with just one
"Appname Help" item in it...
