Is there an official place to put a "Check for Updates" menu item? I can
think of three good places: Just under the Preferences item in the

application function, but the Help menu is often lonely, with just one
"Appname Help" item in it...
I don't know if there is an official place, but most apps I've seen put
it in the Application menu under the Preferences. Putting it in the
About box is not a good idea, because users may not think to look there
for it.
You might consider adding items to the Help menu that let users read the
release notes and/or your software license, using NSWorkspace to launch
TextEdit, for example. You can also have a menu command to take people
to your web site (again using NSWorkspace), where users can see what's
new, etc.
