This is a User Interface issue that is not addressed by the Aqua User
Interface Guidelines.
What should the appearance/function be for a Single Window application
or utility?
Imagine you have an application, usually a utility, that only has a
single window. All the functionality of the application is tied into
this window, and it makes no sense to ever not display this window.
Examples from Apple include the Key Caps utility, the System
Preferences utility and the Process Viewer utility. This type of
application has no document windows to be opened & closed, and only one
main window.
Should the Close button be enabled or disabled? If enabled, should it
close the window, or close the application?
Some applications quit if you press the Close Button (Key Caps &
Process Viewer) while others hide the main window (System Preferences)
requiring some method of opening the window when you want to do
something meaningful.
I am in favor of hiding the Close button. If you want to hide the
application, Hide App item (Command-H) is available. If you want to
just hide the window (not sure why), you can minimize it. If you wanted
to quit, the common function for some of the utility programs, Quit App
item (Command-Q) is available. If you hide the window, you must place
some item on the menubar to show the window again.
Any comments?
