But a button is a button is a button... If they allow for instances of
NSButton to be placed in the tooolbar, why not allow for it to work in
the way it does everywhere else?

the exact functionality directly by catching events at the window
level and interpreting them accordingly to the toolbar currently
shown. Don't force it to normal API though -- it would seem to me
something like, say, having the menubar at the screen bottom: you can
do that manually if you insist, but it's not supported normally, which
seems to be right.
