It appears that I have run into the same bug that many others have also
run into with IB and table views. I would assume that this is not news
to Apple and that the good folks there are working to remedy the
problem. Would anyone happen to have any detailed information on what
to avoid and when the issue might be resolved in IB? I'd really like
to be able to use table views in IB...
BTW, thanks to everyone who has helped me out with this. It is
reassuring to know that there is a strong community of developers out
there willing to help each other out.

Try loading MainMenu~.nib
That is a backup file, it may have enough stuff for you to go on...
