You can take a look at my program, TIFF Tuner:
http://www.spectralclass.com/software/tuner.php
It is used for manipulating alpha channels in images. Basically, I
wrote it for just that purpose.
It is easy to make a drawing in some other program and then use TIFF
Tuner to knock-out whatever colour attributes I am not using (it can
also do a sort of "linear application" of the alpha so that
anti-aliased images will have their edges blended out slightly).
Hope that helps,
Jeff.
(I apologize for the shameless plug but I need more feedback to know
what I need to change in the app, plus it _was_ made for this purpose)

What is a low cost way of making an application icon? Photoshop is out
of the question. Also my understanding is TIFFany3 would require using
the professional version to obtain an image with a transparent
background. This would also be expensive. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.
