I'll add three more app suggestions:
* Aquatint. Cool and very reasonably priced shareware.
Makes it really, really easy to make graphics look
Aqua-gumdroppy.
* GIMP. Free, open-source alternative to Photoshop.
Depending on how artistic you need to get, it may be
worth the effort to install X11 and the GIMP.
* Create, from Stone Design. Commercially priced, but
not nearly as expensive as Photoshop. Much easier to
use than GIMP (at least for me, a graphics novice),
and is a native Cocoa app.
Here's the procedure I used to install and run GIMP:
- Install Apple's X11 (beta).
+ N O T E that you'll need to download TWO packages
from Apple: X11 and the X11 SDK. The SDK is a
little tricky to find if you don't know to look
for it. It's in the lower right corner of
<
http://www.apple.com/macosx/x11>.
- Install fink (0.5.1).
+ This is a regular double-click install followed
by a couple of steps in Terminal. I would follow
their instructions up to and including
"fink scanpackages" and skip the remaining steps,
which are more easily done with FinkCommander.
+ N O T E that depending on what your default shell
is, you might have to deviate a bit from their
instructions. In particular, you might want to
edit .bashrc instead of .cshrc, and you might want
to use /sw/bin/init.sh instead of init.csh.
- Install FinkCommander (0.4.3).
+ Launch it, select gimp from the package list,
right-click on it, and choose to install the binary.
- Launch X11.app.
+ Apple's installer will have put this in
/Applications.
+ X11 starts by opening an xterm window. Run "gimp"
from that window (or "gimp &" if you prefer).
