I think the concession they made for people who like to use 2-button
mice is probably staring you right in the face: it's called the USB
port. You can stick a 2-button mouse in there, if you like.
I did. It doesn't make the one-button mouse I have disappear (yeah,
we Students are cheap...).
Also, it doesn't help people with iBooks or PowerBooks. It's pretty
awkward to be using an external mouse when you're on the train and
there is no table. And there's no way to replace the built-in
trackpad with a two-button one.
This is a good point!! Why aren't there icons on mouse buttons?
They would have to be rather generic, though. After all, what is the
right mouse button for me, would be the left one for a left-handed
one.
I think there's no really good reason for Apple not to ship
multi-button mice these days, other than it's just part of the Apple
culture to only need one mouse button ... I'd say, in some ways, its
even part of the Apple brand, and we all know how Stevie loves to
foster that!
Well, it *is* less distraction for newbies. When I started out using
computers, I was constantly using the wrong button, because my eyes
were glued to the screen, and the natural position of my index finger
was somewhere in the middle of the mouse.
Lord knows, I know you're not the only Apple geek on the planet with
a one-button mouse sitting on the shelf, doing nothing. I think
I'll use mine to make a Christmas gift for someone ... maybe it'll
look good hanging from my friends rearview mirror in his pimpy car,
heh heh ...
I wonder whether that mouse works on a PC? Anybody try that? That'd
probably be a great way to participate in April Fool's Day madness
... ;-) Especially since Apple's optical mouse looks like it didn't
have a button *at all* :-D
