That's exactly the way I've done it for 2 or 3 years now, and will again
this year. You will surely be overwhelmed, but it's a good feeling. Take
notes when you see stuff that's interesting to you (because you won't get
the videos until months later), but mainly just pay really close attention
and try to absorb what they're telling you. You won't understand a lot of
it, but it will sit there in your brain and drop aha! moments on you for
months afterwards.
Also, I expect this year will be like last, in that the primary focus will
be on upcoming features in the new OS -- this year, in Panther (Mac OS X
10.3). This will give you a head start on new features and techniques, but
it's also a little frustrating because you won't really be able to do
anything with them until September or so when the new system is actually
released. You'll get a CD with an alpha or beta of Panther, so if you can
manage it, it's probably a good idea to come with an external Firewire drive
so you can install the beta and boot from it to explore the new stuff in
your "spare time" during the week.
Like they're all telling you, the real value is in meeting people. Apple
engineers. Omni Group engineers. People from this list. The interactions in
the hallways, lounges, lunch room and evening events are invaluable.
I'll be in the morning AppleScript Studio early bird session (trying to
catch up, since I haven't played with Studio since 1.0). If that's the
session you're in, buttonhole me at the beginning or at the end, or
whatever. I'm already meeting up with one or two attendees for lunch
afterwards, and I think it would be fun to just continue talking about it
after lunch, too.
