Actually, the law in the US and the various countries signatory to the Berne Convention is very specific. It is lawful to make copies for individual personal use under very specific circumstances. It's lawful to record a TV show to watch it later, for example. It's also lawful to make a copy of a CD to carry with you in your car.

But the instant you give, sell, or otherwise assign a copy of a copyrighted work to another person, you've broken the law, and can be sued for civil damages. If you do it in sufficient volume--I believe the statutory limit is infringement in the value of $1000 over a period of 180 days--it's a felony punishable by a fine, prison time, or both.

Copyright infringement is very serious business. And, as I said, it sounded to me like this individual was soliciting someone to take over development of a tool for that express purpose.

(This will be my last post on the subject to the list. I've said my piece. Further replies will be off-list only.)

ah... oh...... I see, I missed the point, sorry.
hmm, well.

BTW, according from what I've last read and understood, although I didn't pay a lot of attention, music sharing from user to user is legal.
And if you say the opposite there is one thing I will absolutely stand for, the legality or not of such activity between owners of the files is yet to decide, but meanwhile legal (and probably thereafter > too,...)
Or so I believe .....

Napster was judged illegal, but you had a central server. KaZaa and consort have no central server and believe they are about to be approved !

or haven't you understand a thing of what the guy was asking ?

It's entirely possible that I misunderstood. If so, everybody make fun of me for the next five minutes. But from my chair, it sounded like he was asking for somebody to finish a music piracy tool. It was that bit about "easily download mp3's on the mac" that gave me that idea. Downloading copyrighted music is, of course, both illegal and immoral.

I'm not flaming anybody. I just thought the guy might like to know how his message came across, and would appreciate the opportunity to clarify it if he so desired. In point of fact, I *meant* to reply only to him privately, but blah blah stupid "reply all" button blah blah. So apologies all around.
