That's not actually a very good example. As I understand it, iDVD is
only licensed for use with an Apple SuperDrive because Apple pays for
an MPEG-2 encoding license every time they sell a SuperDrive. If you
use iDVD with a third-party drive, you're technically using the MPEG-2
encoder without a license, and that's a bad, bad deal.
iPODs are hardware for both platforms.

Apple will release cross platform development environments only if it
promotes their hardware. Remember, Apple is a hardware company.
Actually, first and foremost, Apple is a *company*. Anything that
promotes current and future profitability is a good move. The iTunes
music store has nothing to do with hardware sales; it will be available
for Windows users as well. But iTunes music store is a profit center of
its own. Yellow Box could feed into that sort of model in one way or
another.
