Is there something weird about my out-of-the-box-plus-auto-upgrades OSX

Or is their a strange bug in Mail.app? The last seems the least
implausible. Anyway, whenever I make the (for me) mistake of trying to
read one of his postings I get the beachball of death until I
Apple-Option-Escape Mail. I would like to know if I am unique in this.
I'm using the same sort of system - began with a clean 10.0 install, and
it's been upgraded over time to 10.1.5. I'm also using Mail.app, and Mr.
Morales' emails work just fine for me. The headers on his latest email
list "Apple Mail" as the app he's using, same as your's, although he's
using a newer version - 10.2, I'd assume.
Hardly anybody (whether old hand or beginner) who posts to this list is
uninteresting - that's what makes it such a good one. Ergo I want to
read Oscar's messages.
If all else fails, you could read them from the archives at MamaSam -
