I have enjoyed five or six WWDCs for social reasons, but IMHO they are a total waste of time if you expect to learn anything technical. All sessions are geared to the lowest common denominator which means that in 50 minutes, the presenters have basically explained what the subject of the session is and are about to say something that is not common art or well documented. A few weeks or months after the sessions, all information that was presented is available either in the press or in Apples samples and documentation.

The announcements and technology at the conference are always widely distributed right away. The reason Apple has the conferences is to disseminate information in as many venues as possible and to market to developers. Rest assured that they will market to you sooner or later whether you attend or not, and technical information is documented somewhere other than the session notes ;)

If your goal is to hang out with like minded people, eat good food, stay in a nice hotel, and hear announcements the exact moment that the reporters in the front row hear it, go to the conference. If you have plenty of friends at home, enjoy your own bed and home cooking, and can stand the half hour delay before the reporters submit their stories to the web, stay home.

The new/novel/original technical content of these conferences is nil.

Hi,

I have been developing Mac software for more than 10 years, but have never
been to a WWDC (even though I lived in Reno.. Just 4 hours from San Jose/San
Francisco).

This year, it looks like I have the time and money to go. Is it worth it?

I am living in Europe now and have to use frequent flyer miles to get there
- just looking for impressions from those who have gone before. If it
matters at all, I am an independent developer and not tied to a big
corporation.

Comments?

Also - where is a good place to stay that will not break the bank?

Thanks,

Trygve
