The official archives are not useless, they are just not nearly as good as Mamasam. Searching for "splash screen" in the official archives returns lots of hits. I didn't expect him to know about Mamasam, that's why I included that link in my reply.
I did however expect him to have tried to search some archive of Cocoa-Dev before posting. This is not a mailing list for mom and dad, this is a list for developers and I do expect people on this list to have a better than average understanding of how mailing lists work.

Finally, I don't think it's rude to point to answers known to be easily accessible in the mailing list archvies, I think it's effective. It means that we don't have to go through the same discussion one more time, and the possible meta-discussions that often follows (for example: *should* you use a splash screen?).
