I think the important question being asked here is: How persistent is
the meta-data? In other words... will it survive a trip to another

The answer is YES in both cases (*), as Spotlight only digs out
meta-data contained in the file and places it in a structured cache -
it doesn't change the file or it's meta-data.
The meta-data import is done to make the meta-data available to users
via a standardized API, and to make queries faster.

the net.
I think the original poster also wanted to know whether you can use
spotlight to generate (and store) meta-data not otherwise contained in
the file. I am guessing the answer is no... or at least that you
shouldn't. Though, it seems that spotlight would provide quick access
to any meta-data that can actually be extracted from the file itself.
Correct (as far as I can tell). The current implementation is a sort of
"local read-only meta-data search engine". You can read and search for
meta-data with Spotlight, but you can't edit it any more than you can
edit web pages with Google.
