I think the important question being asked here is: How persistent is the meta-data? In other words... will it survive a trip to another drive (I think the answer is yes)? How about a trip around the net (My guess is no)?


I think the original poster also wanted to know whether you can use spotlight to generate (and store) meta-data not otherwise contained in the file. I am guessing the answer is no... or at least that you shouldn't. Though, it seems that spotlight would provide quick access to any meta-data that can actually be extracted from the file itself.

I would recommend looking at the new Core Data specs if you are looking for new ways to work with data.
