Safari 1.0.x used some sort of metal pattern when it draws its tabs.
How did they do that? Metal does seem to be available as a pattern in
10.3, but I'm wondering how Apple drew those tabs in 10.2...
Maybe Safari does not actually draw the background of the tabs. The
Tabs are most probably drawn transparently and the background of the
window is shining through. Or Safari used some unoffical API. ;-)
I don't know of a public API for drawing metal, but maybe I missed
something.
If you need the metal pattern, you can find all needed metal images
with ThemePark:
Open ThemePark, select "New Theme" and you can find them in
Elements->Global Elements->Metal Window.
Please note that it is not done just to draw the pattern image. If you
look at metal windows, you can see that there is a gradient. In the
middle of the window, the metal is lighter than left and right.
There is also a "Metal Window Gradient" Image in ThemePark, which is
512x1 Pixels in size, with the following comments:
"The gradient is stretched over the Metal Texture. It is also used for
Metal drawers. If you want to replace the brushed pattern and the
gradient, be sure to also fill the gradient with the same fill and not
just leave it empty. Otherwise you will have completely black metal
drawers."

Mani
