I can understand this, but mainly for personal messages. For mailing
list messages

It's not web interface vs stand alone application.
The fact is that GMail interface is totally focused on "conversations"
instead of single messages.
This is very effective in handling normal mail, but it is incredibly
useful for mailing list subscriptions
