Here are a few reasons why attachments should be included in the list :

1. Security - Attachments can be checked for viruses (when uploaded).
2. Availability - Attachments will exist in the list archives, whereas url links may break in the future.
3. Security - Attachment contents cannot be modified, whereas the data the url points to may change.
4. List members don't need their own web space to post attachments.
5. Storage space - Attachments can be compressed on Apple's servers and decompressed (in real-time) when requested.
6. Bandwidth - Apple's servers will probably have more bandwidth than most user's own web space.

I'd also really prefer the new mail software to reject attachments. There is no reason to ever send an attachment to a mailing list -- post it somewhere and give a url.
