As I live on the other side of the planet, I was just wondering if anybody who knows San Francisco can recommend a hotel close to the WWDC convention centre?

I've never stayed there, but the Hotel des Arts is a funky hotel that's not too far (perhaps a 5 minute walk) from the convention center. It's also near the French consulate and several French restaurants. There are many Starbuck's on the way to the convention center for a morning coffee and pastry. Some rooms are quite basic, shared bathrooms, no TV, etc., but there's always plenty of art on display.
