This is somewhat misleading. True, there is MUNI, but there are many,
many parts of the city that are poorly served by it. Also, the MUNI
trains can be slow and stressful to ride during the regular commute
hours.
My advice would be to stay anywhere near a BART station. This opens
up the potentially cheaper options of Oakland and Daly City. From
either, it's still only about a 20 minute ride to the Montgomery
Station (probably best bet for the convention center). Keep in mind,
though, that this will add about $4-8 per day in transit costs,
depending how far away you stay.
For truly complete transit info covering SF and the entire bay area,
see www.511.org. When in the 9 counties which make up the bay area, you
can access the system by telephone by simply dialing 511. The transit
trip planner on the site is actually quite good.
