This is somewhat misleading. True, there is MUNI, but there are
many, many parts of the city that are poorly served by it. Also, the
MUNI trains can be slow and stressful to ride during the regular
commute hours.
My advice would be to stay anywhere near a BART station. This opens
up the potentially cheaper options of Oakland and Daly City. From
either, it's still only about a 20 minute ride to the Montgomery
Station (probably best bet for the convention center). Keep in mind,
though, that this will add about $4-8 per day in transit costs,
depending how far away you stay.
If anybody has any other specific questions about BART or other
travel logistics, feel free to contact me off-list. I do a regular
contracting job in the area of the convention center, and I rarely
drive in the city, so I'm pretty familiar with the options.
