Create a folder on the disk named "images".  Put your background image in there.  In the Terminal, rename the folder to ".images".  In the View Options palette for your disk image, select "Picture" and "Select" for the background.  In the Open File dialog, presss Command+Shift+G for "Go To" and enter the pathname to the Image: /Volumes/MyCoolDisk/.images/background.tiff
