In general, building a test app is a good way to test out your understanding, and is encouraged.


Regarding the array controller in particular, the use of the filter predicate is not restricted to Core Data...


There seems to be a common misconception that for some reason if you (in the general sense) are using Core Data -- especially in conjunction with bindings -- then any issues you have are related to Core Data rather than the actual relevant technology. In this case, the issue is with the use of NSArrayController. Whether or not you're using Core Data is immaterial.
