In order to be able to subclass something, the linker needs to have a reference to the class itself - the compiler is happy with the declaration in the header, but the linker needs to know where it is.

Normally, this is done by having a common framework that both the application and the plug in link against (which has the plug in root class, as well as any other useful classes/routines that are to be exposed to the plug in).
