To be honest, I think you're taking an off-the-cuff remark *far* too
seriously. :-)
I'm not talking about choosing a platform and/or language based on
real-world project requirements. I'm referring to folks who are either
unable to or unwilling to learn a new language for nonsensical reasons.
When I was young, I lived in a farming community. There were people
there who purchased Ford trucks for one reason - their fathers, and
their grandfathers, bought Fords. They were "Ford Guys" from a "Ford
Family", and that was that. Even as a child, I thought it was a stupid
way of thinking - what about price, warranty, crash tests, etc.?
What you're talking about - opting not to bother learning a language
because it won't help you reach your target audience - is perfectly
reasonable. What I'm talking about is refusing to learn Objective-C
because "I'm a C++ Guy, other languages are teh sux0rz". It's absurd,
and no programmer worth his salary will choose a language on that
basis.
