This seems like a grossly inefficient way of solving this problem.

Could be, depending on what you're trying to optimize.

At the risk of re-igniting the "premature optimization" wars, if you don't expect to be working with heavy folders and aren't doing many compares per second, the tradeoff between time/space efficiency and code simplicity might be justified.
