thanks for your reply.

for now I dont think its _that_ important to use NSDocumentController for the open recent stuff, by the time Ive done all that I might as well just maintain my own recent items set elsewhere....reduces the possible issues with subclassing NSDocumentController and in all honesty is probably less code :)
