You might want to take a look at GNUStep UI designer, that has a documented file format that can apparently be converted to Nib. Also, there are number of toolkits such as Qt and WxWindows that can generate native-looking applications on Mac.

Hi,

I've tried to find information by scowering the net to very little avail. I've gathered a few tidbits which I'll ask about here, and I fervently hope someone here will have something that can help me. If you feel you can contribute to solving this problem, please make sure you've read this entire message first. I'll keep it as short as i can.

I'm currently a Windows developer, though I've migrated nearly everything else I do to Mac. My company wants to expand to the Mac platform, and I need to get going with Cocoa. The catch is that I'm totally blind, and while I can create interfaces with some effort when developing for Windows, this is not possible yet with Apple's Interface Builder and VoiceOver, (the screen reader included with the Mac).

Everyone loves Interface Builder, so when I see archived discussions where people have asked for alternatives, it usually seems to end in people convincing the questioner to stick with it. That's great, but not an option for me.

I understand that there is a method by which interfaces can be built out of Cocoa objects with Java, but I can't find documentation on exactly how to do this, and the one person I've corresponded about it has told me it is rather cumbersome. The impression I've gotten is that it is sort of a dirty way just to get the job done, and is neither efficient nor condusive to productivity.

Lastly, I found reference in a couple of places that NIB files are just a type of PList, and that they can be edited with any PList editor. I'm dubious of this, but if I could gather enough information on this, it sounds like it could potentially be a solution.

If anyone can offer instruction or information on the above methods, or if anyone knows of alternatives that I don't that may work for me, I would really appreciate it. I've been a developer for more than twenty-years and this stumbling block has proven one of the most frustrating situations I've ever run into.

Thanks.
