It's not very common, but perfectly acceptable practice in some cases to have an all-in-one window. As long as Mark allows the user to create another window if they wish.

Though Mail is not a doc-based app, it allows you to create multiple windows (File | New Viewer Window). I recommend this approach, if you want to have an all-in-one doc-based or non-doc- based app.

There have been discussions about how to do this previously (a year or three ago?). I can't remember if it's in this list's archives or if it's at cocoadev.com, but you should be able to find it with a few choice keywords. The poster wanted to create a document-based application with an all-in-one window. I can't remember why, but the explanation provided seemed like a good reason, if memory serves.

the desktop as Word or Photoshop might.

Mark,

I think most people appreciate having the option of opening multiple documents/databases even if they seldom use this feature. I automatically open the last used document in Debt Quencher so most people will probably never "litter" the desktop with multiple documents, but they can if they so desire. Why limit someone unless you are trying to maintain a single library of information like iTunes or iPhoto?

Peace,
