There's no need to create an additional view. Every window already has a content view. Just change the class of that one to your custom NSView subclass.

Can you tell me how this is done? I know there's a content view there, and tried to figure out how to change its class to my custom class, but never quite figured this out. :-(


Switch your view in IB to "outline view" (that second button on the vertical scroll bar area).

Select your window, and toggle the outline. The first item is the content view (it even says so). You can select that and change to a custom view via the inspector palette just like doing that with any other view.

There are a whole lot of things that are either significantly easier (or possible at all vs impossible) by using the outline view...
