Yeah, I recall the convention, I just couldn't actually think of an
application today that canceled text field editing with command-
period. I wonder why people aren't doing this.

Not offhand. But the HIG is quite clear that Escape and Cmd-. are
synonymous. Very old Mac keyboards did not have Escape keys. :)
The docs for NSResponder cancelOperation even say "This method is
bound
to the Escape and Command-. (period) keys".
