-makeFirstResponder works dandy. I have no idea what you are reading, but I suggest you find better sources for information.

As a general rule, if something with Cocoa seems unnecessarily hard, you are probably trying to do it wrong (or at least at odds with the frameworks which are famous for making easy tasks require no effort, hard tasks easy, and impossible tasks take just a little longer than hard tasks).
