There are advantages to the Expression scanners over the Perfection line, but
the real question is one of price range: if you are not in the market for a
1000+ scanner, than the Perfection 1640 is a great choice... if you can
afford the difference, then the Expression scanners should offer more
professional options, and generally better results. Certainly the Expression
1640XL will beat the Perfection 1640su on all counts. The slightly older
Expression 1600 has a lower bit depth, and possibly a bit more linear
artifacting at maximum resolution, making that comparison more difficult.
