I'm not the original poster of this question but I'm in a parallel pursuit
(120mm and 4x5 scans of transparencies and negatives). Something tells me
this is way off topic for this list, but as I sort of found it here I hope
no one takes offense if I continue it.
I did a comparison on the Epson site of these two units and from the specs
the relevant differences I see are these:
Perfection 1640SU Photo
White cold cathode fluorescent lamp
3.2 Max
42-bits per pixel internal, 42-bits per pixel external (selectable)
14-bits per pixel internal, 14-bits per pixel external (selectable)
Transparency unit Included; 4" x 5"
$399.00
Expression 1600 Pro
Xenon gas cold cathode flourescent lamp
3.3 Dmax
36-bit per pixel internal/external 24-bit per pixel external (selectable)
12-bit per pixel internal/external 8-bit per pixel external (selectable)
Transparency unit Included; 8.5" x 11.7"
$1,099.00
It seems that the only spec the 1600Pro has over the 1640SU is transparency
size (4x5 meets my needs) and Dmax 3.3 vs 3.2. Is the Dmax a significant
enough issue to tip the table? What about the different tube, anything
relevant in that. Anything other specs I may have overlooked that are
relevant?
I've built this question off of C. Davids reply, but any responses are
welcome.
Thanks,
Todd
