Just the opposite for me. There's a before and after example in the tips
section at
http://www.digitaldog.net. I DID use the RAW functions in the D1
to do this work. That means having to shell out $500 for Nikon's software in
order to get to the raw file which I think is insane but necessary.
I also just profiled the RAW file off the Olympus E-10 (which is a much
better camera than the D1 and the acquire module to get to the 10 bit Raw is
free). It worked pretty well. What I also found interesting was the non raw
Olympus file had a significantly wider gamut than sRGB. That's good news. In
the past I've seen many digital cameras (mostly lower end) that forced the
RGB into sRGB which is a shame and without the ability to get a raw file,
pretty much suggests there's no reason to profile the camera.
