Yes, I had a client on the phone the other day who was having fits trying to
determine how to set these ink limits in advance with this 2% incremental
printout. It is not at all obvious and the manual is little help. But your
problem of matching light components to darker ones makes the issue more
complex still. The lighter components are slaved at fixed settings to the
darker master inks in most such situations, but you are getting control at
the cost of responsibility here. Using a densitometer comes to mind, but this
step is really in advance of the liniarization, and is intended *only* to set
limits, and avoid over inking, pooling and bleeding. I would simply analyze
each ink for those features, and assume that any ink that wasn't strangled to
a point it couldn't print patches of its maximum darkness, on one hand, and
did not bleed, mottle or run on the other, would then be effectively
controlled for all other functions at the liniarization and profiling stages.
