Sure, if you're using dye based ink. Correct my memory if I'm wrong,
but I believe you said the demo was using the Hexachrome ink set. If
you're trying to print to Hexachrome from CMYK, the colors simply
aren't there!
So it sounds as if the Roland doesn't use hexachrome to create a greater
color gamut, but rather to make up for the lost of gamut created by the
pigmented inks?
If I put dye based inks in the Roland, will I be able to match the
output of the HP?
I'd think so, but I haven't really looked at it -- I need longevity,
and am generally delighted with the Hexachrome ink set.
The HP was designed (and is sold to) the engineering/CAD markets. The
Roland was specifically designed for, and is marketed to, the
fine-art and photography markets. When I did my research, there was
no comparison.
Another thing to consider: Roland uses piezo heads that last a long
time, but are more expensive than the thermal heads on the HP, which
only last 1,000 sqft or so.
And I'm pretty sure the Roland has better ColorSync support!
