Thanks for your response. Does a printer like the HP Designjet 3500 do this
as part of its calibration process or is it something that needs special
software to do? If so what software?

As others have told you, the HP DesignJets have built-in linearization. Most RIPs allow you to use curves or tables to linearize the printer, though.
