No 16-bit LAB in PhotoShop 6

I learned today from my service bureau that PhotoShop 6 does NOT support
16-bit LAB. I had requested scans in that configuration. They thought they
could do it. After finding that PS wouldn't open them, they called Adobe and
got word that despite all the documentation to the contrary, PhotoShop
doesn't support it.

So what's up with that? (Or, is this old news?)
