why don't any of the current inkjet drivers use a CMYK output profile
and let ColorSync do the conversion from RGB to CMYK, thus removing a step
from the process and allowing advanced users more control?
Speed may be one reason. The other is that a user (especially a
non-advanced one) could select a profile that would cause problems with
the device, like laying down way too much ink, or give really awful
results. Another factor is that we'd need six color profiles for most of
the currently shipping inkjet printers and we don't have exactly
affordable consumer level 6-color profiling software.
Probably the final reason is that there are about 50 people on the planet
who need such a feature and about 40 of them subscribe to this list.

The real reason that any OS level print drivers do not use CMYK
profiles is that neither Microsoft or Apple OS is capable of sending
CMYK data from the OS. The only way a printer can receive CMYK (or
more channels) is via Postscript.
