Joe Borne responded to one of my comments:
Actually, its close to the exact issue I was trying to underscore. The
variation of color percentages in individual channels caused by ICC profile
color re-mixing will result in a proof that defeats the purpose of the
Approval on _dot_critical_work_.
This is indeed true if you are using the Approval to simulate some other
output device (typically a press). Don't discount the fact, however, of
using ICC profiles to convert data from some other defined space (i.e.
digital camera to Approval or alternate CMYK space to Approval) when the
Approval is the final proof. I'm sure you know this Joe, I'm just trying to
make it clear to others. Same with the other comments, actually - I just
have spent a lot of time explaining things to designers that they read out
of context either on the internet or in print.
Actually what I was trying to get across in my original point above is that
if you are using Approval as your press proof, make sure the device that
ultimately images the plates uses the same screening algorithms, resolution,
dot shape, screen angles, etc. as the Approval. Just because the Approval
uses halftone dots, doesn't mean that the ultimate output device will use
the same dots. Switch any of these things and the integrity of the proof
goes out the window.
